A Fouta Towel Is Not Just A Towel

A Fouta towel is an old design that is finding new uses. These large pieces of hand-woven, natural cotton fabric are practical as well as beautiful. They are big and become increasingly soft and absorbent with each washing.

Foutas are hand woven in Tunisia. Made on traditional looms in the traditional style they come in traditional sizes. They are usually at least six feet long and either forty or thirty eight inches wide.

Even though they are very absorbent these natural cotton creations are not bulky like conventional towels. They make an attractive beach or pool-side cover-up. They can actually be worn like a sarong or a skirt.

Because they are large, light-weight and attractive, Foutas can be used for an amazing number of purposes. They make decorative wall hangings and window curtains. You can spread the contents of your picnic basket out on one.

Anyone who has experienced abrupt changes in temperature between indoors and out knows the value of the carrying an extra layer. Carry a Fouta in your car and have it handy when a sunny day turns chilly. It's easier than trying to remember to bring a sweater or jacket.

Hot weather calls for skimpy clothing and as little of it as possible. Soaring temperatures also inspire businesses to crank up their air conditioners to keep their respectably dressed workers functioning. A good idea when entering an air-conditioned museum, theater or restaurant on a hot day is to bring something to drape over shoulders to minimize chill.

Foutas take up less room in luggage than traditional towels and serve more purposes on a trip. They protect from harsh sun or chilly breezes. Worn as a skirt or shawl they can also modify a too-casual wardrobe and make it acceptable for visiting historic places where shorts, bare arms or uncovered heads are not welcome.
