Where To Get An Online DIY Safety Guide For Emergency Roof And Gutter Repairs

| Saturday, March 31, 2012
By Jason Manning

A DIY safety guide for emergency roof and gutter repairs could mean the difference between life and death. Even if things never get that dire, it can mean that you do the job better and live to tell the tale. Skeptical? Then why are roofing repairs considered the most dangerous of all, even over electrical ones?

If getting two or three stories up makes you nervous when you are just thinking about it, you might want to turn the job over to a professional who will have all the tools and the expertise to do the job well. Some things, like gutter cleaning or re-hanging, might happen so often that you choose to take care of them yourself, or finances might make DIY the only option.

One of the first things is to consider the word 'emergency' from a roofer's perspective. The weather must cooperate, being dry and without winds strong enough to blow you around or make it hard to swing materials into place. When it is raining, icy, or under snow, your housetop will just have to wait. If it really can't, then call for professional help.

Once the weather is dry and the wind has died down, you can get started. While waiting for the right conditions, plan out the project. List all the tools you need, take what measurements you can from the ground, and make sure you have the safety equipment to do the job without injuring yourself. Know what you are going to do in the order you are going to do it to eliminate extra trips up and down and impulsive decisions while working.

Safety gear starts with tough gloves and protective goggles. There is no sense in saving money by risking your neck on the housetop and having to go to the emergency room because you got a shard of metal of a piece of old shingle in your eye. Gloves will protect you from jagged edges (which come with plastic as well as metal), raised nails, and splintered wood.

Many homeowners decide against a safety harness. Is this a macho thing, or what? This is the one thing that will guarantee that you will not slide off, stumble off, get blown off, or pass out from the altitude and fall off a high place. At least, it will if you pay attention to the fit and make sure the anchor you tie onto is strong enough for the purpose.

Wearing a tool belt with everything you need will ensure that you have not left needed things on the ground or out of reach. It also means you can have both hands free when you need to put things into place or move yourself around up there. If you don't have a tool belt, you can put everything in a bucket.

Finally, make sure you have another person for a helper or at least a witness. Every DIY safety guide for emergency roof and gutter repairs stresses the need for a buddy. They can hand you stuff, lift things up to you, and get help if it is needed.

Retractable Awnings Can Extend Your Time Outdoors

| Friday, March 30, 2012
By Frank L. Dykstra

Outdoor spaces are becoming a haven that we retreat to after busy days. Unfortunately, there are weather conditions to deal with that can shorten the time we spend outside. However, you can choose retractable awnings to extend your time outdoors. Not only do they provide function and beauty, they can be the optimum solution for your particular space.

Certainly, we have other options to provide the shelter we need. The problem with the other solutions is that there is a lot of work involved in the installation. In many cases they cannot be removed easily. A retractable awning is just the solution to that issue. It can be opened and closed with great ease.

And, with your other shelter options, most will have to be taken down in the winter. This is especially true in a harsh winter areas. Snow, sleet and other conditions will damage the fabric. Obviously, because retractable awnings fold away, they are safe.

Aside from that, they are a great option because there are so many different styles to choose from. What's more, you can make them completely personalized by choosing the fabric yourself. That means that you can have a very uniform look to your outdoor space.

Canopies and tents are usually mass-produced and don't give us many options with regards to colors and sizes. Quite often we don't get the look that we are aiming for. That often leads to uncomfortable design solutions. Obviously, this is not the optimum solution. The idea of spending time in nature, to some extent, is about comfort and beauty.

Awnings come custom-made to fit your particular space. This aspect enables you to design the space as you please. You also have more choice when it comes to the mechanism itself. It can be opened and retracted either with a manual crank or automatically. The automatic version is of course slightly more expensive, but it saves you the trouble of having to put forth any effort.

Of course, these items are actually a part of your home. Therefore, if you are thinking of selling your home, it will definitely add to the value. In addition to that, it adds to the value of your own life. This is because you can spend more time outside, no matter what the weather has in store for you.

Caring For Your Koi Carp Pond After A Storm

| Wednesday, March 28, 2012
By Owen Jones

A storm can be distressing for your outdoor fish, especially for large koi carp, which, being large, probably do not have many places to hide. However, if you have designed your koi fish pond well, you will have taken this into consideration when your constructed the pond. Similarly, the pond must be deep enough for your fish to be able to get well below the choppy surface level.

If you got ready for the storm, you probably put a net over the fish pond, so the first thing you ought to do after the storm is clear up any fallen debris and take away the net, so that you can get a good look at your fish and what happened to them. They may be a bit stressed, so move slowly and try hard not to frighten them. Stress is a killer in the animal world as well as in ours.

Did you take the additional precaution of sand-bagging the rim of your pond to stop it over-flowing and the fish swimming away? If so, take away the sand bags, so that you can get a closer look.

Now you can get a good look at the upheaval, if there is any. Use a net to gently skim off any leaves that have blown under the netting and into the pond. If any plants have been uprooted, put them back where they should be. In general, put the pond back as it used to be, so that the fish feel at home. Again, move slowly and try not to put your fish under any more stress.

If you have to carry out major structural repairs, you could place your koi in a child's plastic paddling pool until you can sort the issue out. Put the pool in a shaded area and fold the netting over it several times so that the fish can not get out and cats and birds cannot get in. If you can aerate the pool with a pump so much the better.

Put a few plants in there with them for cover and feed in moderation. if the repairs will take a long time, you could ask your local pet store to take them away for a week or whatever. You will need to pay board and lodgings, but it is preferable to losing your prized koi carp.

Once any repairs have been carried out, you ought to check the water quality, which could have been affected by debris falling into the pond or by your repairs. Rain, especially acid rain, can have quite an effect, especially if it rained for a long time.

First check the water for nitrates. If the levels are unacceptable (see the testing kit for details), you should stabilize them. If the levels are very high, first remove the plants from the water.

Then analyze the KH levels. If they are low, say, below 100, then you could add a cup of baking soda per 1,000 gallons of water and check again. Whatever you do, the fastest way to de-stress your fish is to reinstate their environment to what it used to be with sparkling water to swim in.

|
By Rose Glenmore

Choosing the best power tool is often difficult if you don't have much exposure to it. You could find it difficult given that you have a great number of different brands and so many different models. Typically, most individuals like a particular brand, and they remain loyal to it, but some of the other factors in making a purchase are price, quality, and warranty of the product. Surprisingly, females purchase 29% of the power tools, but that might be because they are giving gifts to family or friends. Whenever presenting gifts to a man, a power tool will most likely work, but make sure it is one he likes.

It is essential to use the right tool, like a electrical power saw, but the accessories are important also, like the right blade. The actual blade you want is determined by what kind of cut you are making. If you're making a cut down the grain of the board, you will want a rip blade. The blade features deep teeth and so the cuts will be quick though may not be very clean. A crosscut blade is required should you be making a cut across the grain. Considering that either side of the blade have teeth, you will be able to have very nice and clean cuts.

As opposed to transferring between blades, you can make your life easier by using a combination blade. One equipped with a fewer number of teeth will make a rougher cut, so if you want smooth cuts, you need to get one with more teeth. The clearest cut is going to come with the combination blade with the most teeth, but also accessible are specialty blades. If you're not positive what blade is the most suitable, consult the manual to get the information you need. For those who have the correct tools and accessories, your task will go more smoothly and you'll have a quality product.

Occasionally, you will have the option of more than one tool, which could get your job finished, so take some time to choose the right one. It is usually best if you see what the positive aspects are and the drawbacks so that you can make an informed decision. Something that you aquire could prove to be more valuable than you thought. As you look for your power tool, be sure that it is light enough so it will not cause any long term aches and pains. You may find that it works great in the store but it may not be the case when you start actually using it.

If you don't know if you are using the tool to its fullest potential, consult the instruction manual. You must always do some investigation online before you go out and buy a power tool.

It would be best if you have acceptable tools when you begin a home improvement plan. When beginning a home improvement project, without the correct tools; the job will take more time. The actual tools you will need may vary according to the job at hand, but we will explore some of the various tools that you should always have available for just about any improvement or repair. Keyring Bottle Openers are very handy.

One important point to consider is whether to get cordless power equipment or the ones with cords. Cordless equipment is known for not having as much power as the same unit with a cord; however, they are much more suited for most projects. Cordless also offers a safer work place due to the fact that there is not a cord cluttering the workplace and creating a hazard. If you decide to get cordless tools, you might want to use lithium ion batteries rather than regular ones. These batteries are rechargeable and will hold there charge longer than standard rechargeable ones; they will also last longer under colder conditions. Cordless power equipment can give your home improvement scheme an element of safety and tidiness.

Get a tape measure, because you will always need to have things measured, when you live in a house. There are times when you need to measure angles or how flat something is, and you will want a combination square. Different levels will be needed for many home improvement jobs.

For any job that you will try to accomplish, safety equipment is necessity that you cannot ignore. People that work with drills and saws definitely need to use safety glasses. This is also true of paint which can drip into your eyes. If you're going to be using loud tools you may want to get some kind of ear protection. It is important that you also use gloves on your hands so they do not get cut with razor-sharp edges or get splinters when working with wood. Anyone that works with fiberglass insulation should always wear a dust mask over their mouth and nose. Construction work should always be done with a helmet or hard hat on your head. Give everything it's due consideration, and make sure that your safety equipment is on hand at all times.

In fact, it's a good idea to have several types of lights of varying sizes. A hands free headlamp, sometimes called a miner's light is one of the best kinds of lights to have if you need both your hands for a job. Anytime there isn't the proper lighting, such as dark stairways, the situation can become dangerous.

Good tools can be found online, and you might find better prices if you shop around. It is nice to get a good deal on tools, but don't buy the cheapest if you are giving up quality. Sometimes you see something advertised on TV, such as tools for multipurpose, that look promising, but they might not be. Consider how many functions you will actually use a tool for. A multipurpose tool might sound like a good idea, but each use of the tool will never be as good as the quality you get from a single tool. Doing a home improvement project on your own will definitely require the purchase of tools that you probably don't have. Once you know exactly what you want to do, you can reference this article in order to choose exactly what tools and items you will need to do your project. Getting the job done begins with having the right tools at your disposal so your project can be completed in an appropriate manner.

How To Prepare Your Fish Pond For Storms

|
By Owen Jones

It does not matter where you live, I am sure that you have storms at some time of the year. In the north of the northern hemisphere, we tend to get lots of rain in winter and spring. In the tropics, there may be monsoons. Whatever you call them, they produce lots of wind and lots of rain in a short space of time - it is basically a storm.

The fact is that, if you know that a storm is approaching, you can take safety measures and save your precious fish, whether they are expensive or just dear to you. It might be useful to distinguish between minor and major storms, but that is only helpful if you can trust your weather announcer.

Minor Storms: the first thing to do is to stop feeding your fish, if you have enough notice of the storm. Fish can easily live for weeks on the insects and plant life in the water, so do not be concerned. The reason for stopping feeding is that if the storm damages your filtration system, the quality of the pond water will not deteriorate so much, if there is no uneaten food in it.

Remove some of the water to allow for the rainfall, but do a partial water change too, because otherwise the reduced water level will contain greater levels of impurities until the rain comes.

Remove items from the vicinity that can blow over and fall into your pond. It is a good idea to put a net over the pond to prevent debris being blown into it too. Flying twigs or branches could alarm or even spear your fish.

Major Storms: we are not talking about hurricanes here. If a hurricane looks likely to hit, you should evacuate your fish to a temporary tank somewhere safe - maybe a 50 gallon barrel in the basement or somewhere like that.

If you want to be totally certain that your fish will be ok, you could ask your local pet shop to take them away to safeguard them otherwise continue as for a minor storm but with the following extra precautions.

Disconnect all the electrical equipment in and around your fish pond. Make sure that there is no way that a live wire can fall into the pond and electrocute your fish. Remove all the plants from your pond as they could be damaged by the wind and waves, but leave any stone hiding places that your fish will surely look for while the storm is blowing. If you think that perhaps you do not have enough 'caves', build some provisional ones from bricks or blocks.

Put a double layer of netting over your pond and tie it lower down than normal, say only a few inches above the water line, but not so low that if a fish gets out, it cannot get back in. Finally, build a wall of sand bags at least two feet high all the way around your pond. This will permit the water to get in and drain away, without taking your fish with it, which is why the net must be high enough to allow the fish to get back into the pond.

Useful Hints On Sash Window Security Solutions And Home Insurance Advice

| Sunday, March 25, 2012
By Glen Middleston

Home security is extremely important, and there are many steps that you can take in order to protect your belongings and loved ones. A large majority of break-ins involve burglars getting in through windows, and sash windows are often the easiest. By following some simple measures regarding sash window security solutions and home insurance advice you can rest assured that you are doing all you can in the fight against house crime.

The traditional style window is an old design which is often found in Georgian style homes, as well as Victorian houses. Replacing this style often reduces some of the value of your house and so it is more common to find them still in in place. They are in keeping with the style and make a home look very aesthetically pleasing.

You can save some money on your insurance quote if you remember to make sure that all of the windows in your property are fully secure. If you fail to do so, you may find it harder to make a claim when you need to, so it is worth a small investment making sure the job is done correctly.

Relying on the traditional clasp on the woodwork which keeps the frames locked together is not enough. It is very easy to break in if you do not fix additional security devices. To help keep out intruders you should attach duel screw fittings that will bolt the two sashes soundly. This prevents them from being pushed up in a very effective manner.

For areas where you frequently need ventilation then the best choice would be to use sash stops. These are great for preventing the frames for being opened and are attached to the side of the wood. They are available in many different finishes and do not take long to unscrew when you need to.

The other advantage of these is that you can use them to support the frame if you want the windows open a small amount. These are perhaps the most effective solution, and they are easy to install. The cost is minimal, especially when you consider the importance of the job which they do so well.

To ensure that your home is protected, and your policy conditions are being kept it pays to invest in some security fittings designed for sash style frames. You can deter thieves by making it more difficult to gain entry to your house. Search for a hardware retail outlet locally or online to find your ideal solution.

Information About The Use Of Patio Awnings

| Friday, March 23, 2012
By Mary A. Hubertson

Patio awnings are useful in many ways. They are great for decoration but also can serve a purpose. They are not only available for a house, but they can be on a motor home or camping trailer as well. Some of them are permanent while others can be taken down quite easily. There are many different styles and colors.

When it is raining, awnings are handy to keep you and your guests dry. These are good to use if you are planning an event outside with friends, such as a barbecue. Your guests will like the added protection just as you will.

Providing shade is a very common use on a day when the sun is shining and it is hot. Different types of awnings should be considered when you are looking to buy one. One that is permanently attached is nice for some people but others may want one that is more portable and easily taken down when they are not using it.

Not all awnings are attached to a house. There are a lot of camping trailers and motor homes that have them also. This type may be attached to the outside at all times but can be rolled up and stored right on the side of the camper. This is extremely important because they need to be held tight, especially when traveling down the road getting to the desired destination.

Camping can require the use of one also. This is because of the weather, as it could rain or there could be a lot of sunshine. When we go camping, we need to be ready for any weather type. Weather is not always cooperative when we need it to be. An awning can create shade from the sun or protection from the rain.

Some of them can be very expensive while others are very reasonably priced. The size that you need will determine what is available to you. The larger the awning, the more expensive that it will be (as with anything that you buy). The permanent fixed ones will be more durable than a temporary one, which will make them more expensive than a portable awning.

Some of them can be replaced just because you want a different one. Others are not replaced that easily. Everybody likes to redecorate, especially when it does not require a lot of money or time. If you want a different awning when it is one that is not portable, you may have to hire a professional to get it done. If you are looking to buy an awning, you are the only one that can decide what type and style is the best.

How To Get The Best Air Filters

|
By Owen Jones

If you have any kind of air purification system installed in your house or office, you will have to change the air filters at some time or another. I am not only talking about dedicated equipment that only purifies the air here, but also air conditioning units like you would find at home, in the office or even in the car. The theory is the same for all.

So, you may be operating an air purifier without even realizing it, but in that situation, especially if it is an older one, it could be doing you more harm than good. This is because a dirty filter will be blowing uncleaned air into the room at best, but in the worst case scenario, it might even be blowing contaminated air at you. Modern air filters do not only stop flies or even pollen from entering the system through the air intake, they go as far as attempting to obstruct common germs too.

So, you have two alternatives. If you have never replaced or cleaned your air filter or if you did not even realize you had one and the air conditioner or air purifying apparatus is over a year old, you should do something about it right away. Begin by reading the instruction manual. If you do not have one go on line and look to see if there is any information on your model at the maker's website or even just anywhere on the Internet. If on the other hand, you have been cleaning and changing your filter regularly, think about getting a better quality filter next time.

You can go about locating the best brands of air filters for your particular type of unit by writing down any serial numbers and identification numbers and names. The brand and model are very helpful too. You have two choices here too. If you like going around the shops, take this information with you and ask about the best filters in several outlets A large DIY or department store could probably assist here. Write every name and fact they give you down on paper and take it home. I prefer to go on the Internet first and take that information around the shops.

Check what they have told you on the Internet. Check it with the maker's web site and compare prices. Decide what you want to buy and where from. Get a year's supply in one go, it saves a lot of bother. Three or four units should last a year, if they are cleanable.

A high quality air filter will perform better than a cheaper one. It will trap more pollutants, including smoke and fumes - even some germs, if it has been impregnated with a germicide. Many come with a long-lasting mild air freshener too, which will save you buying sprays.

Better quality air filters will save you money and bother by lasting longer in good serviceable condition. Cheaper ones may say they last as long, but the germicide and the air freshener may have evaporated within a week or two. Try to get a filter that is cleanable. The best ones can be cleaned two of three times before they have to be changed. If it is three times then it will last four months, meaning that you only need three a year at most.

If you have bought an unknown make of air conditioner or purifier, there is a good chance that it was still made by one of the big names or it a copy of a famous name, in which case a better filter may still fit into it. In this situation, take your old filter to the shop with you to get it compared.

Hot Tub Improvements Over The Years

| Thursday, March 22, 2012
By Owen Jones

Hut tubs have been commercially available for around 50 years, so you can imagine that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were usually only a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with more than two individuals in it. They were almost always round in shape and there was very little variety.

The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940's, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950's, the idea grew and families started to create or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960's, individuals were adding home-manufactured heaters and pumps and very crude versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born.

One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who invented and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970's, manufacturers began to incorporate stronger jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers started constructing more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time.

Jacuzzi started to produce bigger models so that friends or a family could all enjoy the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970's have been technical, but these technical improvements have been quite serious.

The filters are more readily accessible nowadays which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as regularly as they ought to be in order to avoid the build up of bacteria from decomposing vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could create a health hazard. Not just that, but blocked filters means that the pump has to work harder to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more money.

There is a better choice of materials and colours nowadays. Before, the choice was: what type of timber do you want? Now you can still have that option, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you would like as well. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic wood) exterior or skirt.

The benefits of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a product that kills or wards off bacteria and mould.

The seating arrangement can be customized in contemporary spas to suit individual bathers. Every chair may have one or more directable jets and the seat itself might be made to a precise height for a specific person or for a certain injury or condition.

The water heating arrangements are a great deal more adaptable as well. Nowadays, the water can be warmed by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a huge improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun.

To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by placing them in a draw like in a washing machine and have them circulated in the water uniformly.

Whole House Air Purifiers

| Wednesday, March 21, 2012
By Owen Jones

We have all heard of central heating and most of us have heard of central air conditioning, but how about central air purifying? Indeed, is there such a thing? When you go to the mall or general department stores, you tend to see local air purifiers, that is air purifiers that clear the air in one room only. They are portable systems, so that you can watch TV with it on and then take it into your bedroom at night.

This is all right as far as it goes, but rooms are interconnected and the 'dirty' air soon comes in and mingles with your nice clean air. What you really need to do is clean all the air in the whole house, in every room simultaneously. This would be on the same principal as central air conditioning. In fact most central air conditioning systems incorporate an air purifying system. Admittedly, they are usually pretty basic on older conditioners, but they can be very sophisticated too, if you are willing to get a more expensive new conditioner.

The middle ground if you do not want to upgrade your central air conditioner or even if you do not want to air conditioning, is to fit a central or 'whole house' air purification system. This is most easily and most economically carried out if you already have ducting in your house for central heating or air conditioning. The central air purification unit is then simply put in line with your existing ducting.

The central air purifying apparatus is installed into a home's central HVAC (heat, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system, just upstream from the air handler (the furnace or the air conditioner), similar to a central humidifier. This type of central installation enables CAP (Central Air Purification) systems to continuously remove allergens, pollutants and other irritants from the air being supplied to the entire occupied living space of the home, rather than just one room. installing the CAP unit like also keeps it completely out of sight and out of the way.

CAP systems can be fitted into virtually any type and configuration of forced air HVAC system, regardless of age, and are a common sense add-on or upgrade. Many of these systems incorporate a powerful ultraviolet light for added purification. This is called photo catalytic oxidation.

Photo catalytic oxidation has been proved to be highly effective at clearing airborne biological and chemical contamination (206% more powerful than chlorine and 157% more powerful than hydrogen peroxide. The energy field in the photo-catalytic chamber is roughly 10,000 times more powerful than natural sunlight).

These modern whole house or central air purifiers are extremely efficient and can give a new lease of life to sufferers of airborne allergies such as pollen. The system is relatively inexpensive, if you already have ducting in place, otherwise that could cost you an extra $3,000 - 4,000. The actual air purification units themselves are a lot cheaper, costing between $300 and $1,000 and the installer can fit them in minutes with common tools.

An Introduction To Original Sash Windows

| Tuesday, March 20, 2012
By Glen Middleston

Over the past few years, authentic design features have become highly desirable in homes. They have become something of a rarity due to the constant home improvements that have been so popular in recent decades. Now that so many, like sash windows, have been lost, we are understanding the true worth of these little pieces of history.

CHASSIS means frame in French, and it is from this that the word SASH comes. There is some debate about where in Europe the window was first made, but they quickly became a symbol of British design in the seventeen and eighteen hundred, and were used in all sorts of buildings.

Normally, a sash window is framed in oak, and contains two main panels. Each panel can be opened and shut with a pulley, and is made up of smaller window panes. The oak was thought to be a fire risk, so builders were required to have the windows sitting back from the walls - this was not always adhered to though, so examples exist of windows at the same level as the brick.

The windows used previously were made up of lots of small panes, usually square or diamond shaped, surrounded by lead. They restricted the view considerably, so it is not surprising that the larger sash window panes were well received. Sir Christopher Wren, who designed St Paul's Cathedral, increased their popularity when he used them in his buildings.

When window tax was introduced in the seventeen hundreds, many homeowners blocked their up with brick, to avoid the hefty charges. Although obviously many sash windows were lost, this made them more desirable, as only wealthier people could now afford to keep them.

After some time, sash windows became unfashionable and dated. The industrial revolution meant that glass could be manufactured in large, single panes, which made for uninterrupted views. At this point many old windows were simply destroyed.

Today these windows are appreciated for their historical value, and they are often replicated in modern architecture. Originals are highly sought after, so maintaining any that you have will be a good investment. They can be draughty, but modern repair techniques mean that this can be fixed.

Renovators and homeowners now go to great lengths to restore their buildings to their former glory. Restrictions upon listed buildings means we have a responsibility to protect the appearance of historical buildings, so ripping them out is no longer acceptable. It is recognized that period houses simply do not look right with modern designs, and windows are one of the main features of a home.

Stopping Common Indoor Bugs

|
By Owen Jones

The common indoor bugs we see all over the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. No-one likes to have insects indoors, so most people go to just about any lengths to get rid of these common indoor bugs. Less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are not less unwelcome.

It does not matter where you live in the world, it can be very difficult to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors shut all of the time, which is quite impossible. I live in Thailand and I know that this is not an option.

So, what on Earth can you do? Well, let's deal with all the flying insects first, because of all the common indoor bugs, I find them the most obnoxious indoor bug. They are very annoying, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can produce painful sores and besides that, all flies spread disease. I hate to see them walking on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dog's muck somewhere and now they are spitting on my food to taste it with their grubby feet!

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not expensive and can be fitted retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they can protect only one half of a window at a any one time, but I do not find that a problem. You can still set up cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposing ends of a room. I love to see the flies on the mesh trying to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is best to switch on as little light indoors as possible so as not to attract these common indoor bugs.

My second line of defence is natural predators - lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don't like them in the house either. I can't say I'm all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are hard to keep out and they do consume hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to pounce on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the mesh.

My third line of defence is a handheld bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a child's tennis racquet. They are brilliant at catching and destroying any flying indoor bug. The bug literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven't tried using one, you really ought to. They are most gratifying. These three defences keep our house pretty much free of flies.

The creeping common indoor bugs are not so much of a problem really. Door screens on springs will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in pretty very easily, but then, I don't mind them too much as long as they keep out of my way, as they eat other bugs too. They are on our side to be honest. However, for those who can not bear to trap them and put them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works well on spiders too.

Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you keep cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control fairly easily. However, there are two final measures that we use. Once a week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with a bug killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you stick with these methods, you should be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and any less common indoor bug too.

Live In A Fresh, Hygienic Home With Gutter Cleaning Steps

| Sunday, March 18, 2012
By Ernesto M. Bauers

Gutter cleaning can be an important house protection process that properly maintains and keep your home away from possible harm and damages. Cleaning your house gutters is just not a messy or perhaps very demanding work to perform. While using the proper equipment, the venture can be done appropriately, efficiently and hygienically.

The sewer can be a shallow trough inserted below the cover eaves intended to acquire rainwater along with channel this down to the bottom. Beside the collection, you can also smell something that can be damp which will tell you that you need to clean your sewer already.

In the event that these kinds of contaminants are not removed, they will at some time develop into any vegetation and can increase to mould. This may lead it to seep on to the other parts of the house and become vulnerable to many damages. For this reason to protect your house from apprehensive side effects, sewer washing should not be neglected.

Your first task in sewer cleanup is to collect the materials and tools that you'll want to clean your eaves trough. You may choose to clean the drain physically by hand gathering the trash and placing the soil inside a garbage bag. You may also pick up a gadget, for example, pressure washer to wash the gutter quicker. There are also a few trough cleaners which you may use.

A particular sever is attached to some downspouts which direct water to the ground. These kinds of downspouts must also end up being cleaned with the eaves, as leaves and grime may have furthermore accumulated inside it. You may find some tools such as drain pump that can be used to clear the downspout coming from clogs. This device can just be placed in the gutter opening. This will likely block the particular leaves away by developing a siphon that will draw down the water.

In order to avoid any future blockage and possible clog, it is going to be thoughtful if you can use drain screens following cleansing the eaves trough. The best sewer screens to select are the types that can fit safely and securely on the sides of gutters without using drill and screws.

Following simple gutter cleaning steps mentioned above, you can turn your house a fresh, hygienic place to live. Regular inspection with early intervention can help you to avoid any future blockage or an ugly site of microbes to live in and damage your house and you.

Methods To Organize Your Entertainment Center

| Saturday, March 17, 2012
By Eliza Mieler

Entertainment centers may be used in just about any room. They're specially created to hold televisions and stereo equipment, as well as CDs, DVDs, along with other audio/video equipment. Because of their usefulness, entertainment centers can get messy really quickly.

Many of today's entertainment center units have a number of drawers, slide-out shelves, and extra cabinets. With all this space, it is no surprise entertainment centers can quickly become cluttered and disorganized. If your entertainment center is in disarray, here are a couple of actions you'll be able to take to organize items much better.

Take everything out of your entertainment center - The initial step would be to take everything out. You should purge your entertainment center of every thing if you want to really get into it and organize every thing that goes in it.

Discard what you do not use - Discard everything which you don't use frequently. For those who have bought a movie or CD which you once liked but no longer use, burn it on a pc and dispose of the CD. Next, get rid of your old VHS tapes. Given that they are outdated and they take a lot of space in your cabinet, it's much better if you give them to charity.

If you still want to keep a few of your beloved VHS tapes, then keep the particular tapes you enjoy most and discard the rest.

Arrange your DVDs/CDs - Of course, you've a considerable number of DVDs and CDs within your entertainment center. The best strategy to keep them organized would be to keep them in some sort of order. Whether or not it is alphabetically, by order of use, or some other system, the best answer is to sort them in an order that makes sense to you.

The most effective approach to get your DVDs and CDs in order prior to you put them in the entertainment cabinet would be to lay them out on the floor and organize them there.

To be able to do this right, you have to know precisely exactly where they're going to go in your entertainment center and roughly how many you are able to keep in that section. This way you'll be able to simply move your DVDs and CDs from the floor towards the cabinets without a lot of hassle.

Follow these steps and voila! You have an organized entertainment center.

By Glen Middleston

For homes that exude a certain vintage or elegant look, timber windows of the sash type is top choice. The unique graining of wood gives it a certain charm. However, some people might be concerned about timber's durability. In time, they can rot or break, especially when exposed to extreme temperatures or weather conditions.

However, damaged timber components of such window can be easily replaced or mended. A matching wood isn't at all that difficult for a carpenter to find. That's because there are a lot of uPVC sash window designs that mimic the natural beauty of timber. In fact, no one can tell the difference, until a close inspection is made.

Ways To Lessen Your Carbon Foot Print With Sash Window Draught Proofing

| Thursday, March 15, 2012
By Glen Middleston

Living in a house with older windows has its good points and bad. The windows may be classically beautiful with lots of character but they are also old and have most likely become less efficient and functional with age. It is easy to reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing.

You have probably seen advertisements from window replacement shops touting how great new window technology has become. Their position is that it is best to remove older sash windows and to replace them with new, 'modern' units. They offer double-paned, gas-filled vinyl (plastic) framed windows as the alternative.

The best advice regarding older windows is to repair whenever possible and to replace only if absolutely necessary. Old windows are almost always worth saving and, with proper restoration, can be made to look and operate as they were designed to. And new, modern windows do not really look good on an older house.

Windows on older houses were built to last as long as the house and it is still standing, is it not true? But old windows require maintenance in order to function properly. As they age, things wear out and need to be replaced or repaired. If you have really old windows you may have never experienced them working properly. But that can be fixed rather easily.

It could be something as simple as scraping away a few dozen coats of paint. More likely the sash cords need to be replaced or the counter-weights are out of balance. The single most beneficial thing you can do for your windows, however, is to draught-proof them.

It is easy and cost-effective to reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing. Not only will a proper job stop the draughts but it will also minimize dust and noise. It will even help eliminate rattling of the panes. It will help the heat stay in during winter and stay out during summer. It's a very sound strategy.

When Comparing Double Glazed Sash Windows To Single Glazed Windows

|
By Glen Middleston

Comparing double glazed sash windows to single glazed windows is not done for appearance but to compare energy efficiency. The act of using two or more thicknesses of glass with insulating airspace in between greatly improves the insulation against heat transfer and noise.

The sash type of window, with at least one movable panel to allow opening the interior of the building to the outside air, was invented in the middle of the seventeenth century in England. Before then, most windows were of the casement type, with panels that opened outward on side hinges.

The term glazing technically means the glass itself, although some use it to mean the act of putting the glass in the frame; this is really reglazing, or replacing the glass in a window with new putty to hold it in place. Single glazing is using one sheet of glass in a window or a mutton frame (holds individual panes that make up a sash), while double glazing is using two layers of glass with empty space in between. This inner space usually simply contains air, although some manufacturers will fill the space with gas, such as argon.

The act of double glazing increases the insulating effect of the window, blocking more of the heat transfer through the glass and muffling noise as well. Replacing single glazed windows with double ones may qualify the homeowner for tax credits under government energy saving programs. Keeping summer heat and light out and keeping home heat and air conditioning in is much easier with two sheets of glass (or rigid plastic) with an air space in between.

Other ways of insulating windows include draperies, which can cut the amount of heat and light that enter a home, or the heat and air conditioning that escapes, but block the view and the natural daylight as well. Tinting the glass has the same drawback and only works against sunlight; it does not help to keep hot or cold air from escaping from the inside to the outdoors. There are clear, insulating films that may be applied to the glass, but this is a short term fix.

Less expensive models may consist of two sheets of glass per sash, with either no frames or faux frames which are placed over the glass to simulate separate panes. However, windows with many individual panes also can be double glazed, and expert glaziers can even do this in vintage windows.

Comparing double glazed sash windows to single glazed windows will show that the double paned windows are far more energy efficient. The appearance of an older house or building can be preserved if windows are updated. It is a good idea to construct modern homes with double glazed windows to start with.

The Important Of Having Seamless Gutters

| Wednesday, March 14, 2012
By Ernesto M. Bauers

Seamless gutters are literally what the name implies. What makes them good to use is that they can be made on site. All it takes is special machine that is fed with rolled sheet aluminum. Once in the machine the material is pressed and formed into one long and solid section of gutter. These days it is a very popular way to secure the roof from water seepage because of a very important reason.

Its popularity is because the product does not easily erode on its joins, because unlike the more traditional systems they do not have that many joins where erosion is prone. Today there is less damage to roofs and walls because rainwater can easily drain and evaporate. It is a huge advantage where buildings have many troughs that need cleaning from time to time. This fact alone can save a business money which in turn can be used in other areas.

The reasons why many people have leaking roofs is because the old guttering systems did not allow for adequate draining. Water always follows the path of leas resistance so it would take along debris such as sticks, mud and leaves and dump it on the seams. These seams would be an ideal catching point.

Because the debris would sit at these seams, rainwater would collect and overflow onto the roof and down the walls of a building. With constant overflow, you get erosion on the seams and soon you will begin to notice all sorts of damages. Usually when this starts to occur, then it is almost too late to fix the problem.

However, no system is fail proof. The seamless system must still have a few seams here and there; otherwise it will be impossible to install it. The end caps and downspout holes stay vulnerable. However, having fewer seams to worry about certainly makes more economical sense. The chance of mass erosion is lessened and you might never have to repair your gutters.

To prevent any future costs, you need to keep the system clean and free of debris. If the system is properly maintained, the water will completely drain and evaporate before it can cause any damage. This is important in the rainy season as well because debris is more than likely to collect every time you have a downpour. So check the troughs at least four times in the wet season.

You might also think about having a complete trough protection installed over your seamless gutters, to stop sludge from damaging the system even further.

How To Buy Garden Furniture On Line

| Tuesday, March 13, 2012
By Owen Jones

Purchasing garden furniture on line is not the perfect solution as it both solves and presents some problems if it is used haphazardly. For example, if you find it difficult to get about the shops and garden centres, the Internet will allow you to visit hundreds of places to compare styles and prices, but you will not have had sight of your furniture and it may be expensive to return it.

Therefore there are a couple of items to watch out for if you want to buy garden furniture on line. Some of these tips will apply to other items too particularly heavy items.

Be wary of shipping charges because some companies will strive to hide the fact that they can be horrendous. If delivery charges are an extra, do not forget to add these fees on to the cost of the garden furniture before you evaluate prices. Some businesses will talk some claptrap about an order processing fee in an effort to mask their delivery fees. These companies are being dishonest and you should avoid them like the plague.

Try to turn off to the words 'discount' and 'sale price' until you have added up all the costs and you have compared this total with the total cost of a comparable device. Likewise, be very wary of comparisons between list price and sale price. Manufacturers frequently 'recommend' a high list price purposely so that the retailer can offer a discount. It is very common practice, but designed to deceive.

Beware of 'price snobbery'. If you see two retailers selling exactly the same items of garden furniture but at widely different prices, do not be automatically convinced that the cheaper one must be inferior. Instead, look around the cheap web site for extra costs. Do not forget that most retailers buy from the same manufacturers.

Do not believe any company that says that they will not be beaten on price because they are the cheapest on the net or that they will undercut anyone you can prove is cheaper. They have no evidence that they are the cheapest and if you prove that they are not they will reduce their price only to you because you caught them in their lie. These people are liars.

Companies that make a big issue out of fast service are not really giving you anything. Every company likes a fast turn-around because they can bank the check earlier and the warranty finishes sooner too. You will find out how decent their service is if you have a problem. Empty promises and blowing one;s own trumpet mean nothing. Self praise is no praise.

You can check up on the firm's customer service record by typing the company's name, city of business and the word 'issues' or 'problems' into Google. You will soon be able to determine for yourself whether you are dealing with a reputable firm or not. Purchasing garden furniture on line is the same as buying anything else expensive on line: it is up to the buyer to beware before parting with his money because it may be hard to get it back if there is a problem.

Some Popular Wood Working Projects

|
By Owen Jones

If you are a hobbyist who would like to start making object from wood, you may be wondering which wood working projects to try. Of course, the kind of wood working projects you select will depend on your level of ability, but there are so many things that can be made from wood at home, that you never have to be stuck for ideas, whatever level of skill you are presently at.

Popular home wood working projects include clothes hangers, bird tables, wine racks, garden furniture and home furniture like shelving, cupboards and display cabinets. Even teenagers can start to learn on simple projects building up their ability steadily. If you go for popular wood working projects, you will have no problem selling the items you make either.

Wooden objects for home and garden use are traditional and hard-wearing. People value them more highly than an item that has been stamped out by a machine or welded together on a production line. This applies even to something as simple as a swing seat. Everyone would pick the wooden one, even if it were a little more costly.

This is particularly true of interior furniture like display cabinets. Whoever heard of someone displaying a fine bone china tea set in a metal display cabinet? The very thought of it is ridiculous, isn't it? So, if you want to decorate your home and garden well, you pick items made of wood and so does everyone else. Consequently, if you want to sell the goods you make, pick popular wood working projects.

Hardwood is the best wood to use, but it is the most expensive and sources of many hardwoods are protected. This makes them scarce. Teak is one such hardwood that is scarce and very expensive, but teak furniture is one of the most highly prized by connoisseurs.

Whether you are just starting out or fairly experienced affects the sort of popular wood working projects you ought to embark on. Here are some popular wood working projects placed approximately in order of the expertise level need to complete them.

Garden swing seats always look good hanging from a tree in the garden. They are not hard to make look nice and they sell well. Bird tables go down well too. There are a lot of different designs of bird table to pick from: with a little house or without, with climbing perches or not, with a hole for a bathing bowl or not, etc, etc..

Dog kennels are excellent popular wood working projects. Every dog owner wants a kennel for their dog to sit in to take refuge from the sun, wind and rain, while it is outside. Dogs come in all different sizes, so you could make your kennels to order and they need not be of hardwood. Garden benches are not too tricky, but you can increase the style by making them more elaborate and making them from soft or hardwood.

More competence is generally required to work on popular wood working projects for indoors, but you could start with made-to-measure clothes hangers or mug trees. Curtain rods can be as complex as you like too, but a set of matching curtain rods for a room of house would sell well. Wine racks are popular too.

Going up the scale of expertise levels, you could make stools for the breakfast bar and even a kitchen table. Going further up the rungs of popular wood working projects, there would be a dining room table with six or eight matching chairs. The pinnacle of indoor furniture is the intricate, glazed display cabinet. That has to be superb, because people use them to show off their most highly prized items and they are being looked at all the time.

If you are interested in popular wood working projects like these, it is a good idea to get a set of woodworking plans for your project from a reputable source.

Basics of Setting up and Running Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor Parts

| Monday, March 12, 2012
By Kent Henry

Investing in quality tools and machines is always a good idea. A Campbell Hausfeld air compressor certainly qualifies as one of those quality items, and for good reason. This company is known for their high standards of manufacturing excellence, and has been at it for a long time.

It was in 1836 when the company started their operation. By 1940, they begin to manufacture their trademark air compressor. The said compressor has a tank that carries on a pressurized air that allows running numerous arrays of air-powered tools. This article will give you an ample knowledge on the set-up and how a Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor parts operate.

The Campbell Hausfeld air compressor offers you a long-lasting compressor if maintenance and care is strictly imposed. Precautionary measures, guidelines, and directions are very important in every power tool to avoid accident. Like in any other compressors and power tools, it is significant to pay attention to their regular up keeping to ensure their life.

Campbell Hausfeld air compressor works properly on standard house hold circuit which is wired to be properly grounded. The electric motor has a built-in overload switch that automatically shut the motor off when overload conditions occur. Campbell Hausfeld air compressor has also a red button to reset in the overload switch. A longer air hose is suggested to be used, instead of using as extension cord.

Any tube, pipe, or hose piping that you use with your new Campbell Hausfeld air compressor should have a PSI rating higher than 150 psi. There are recommended minimum hose sizes. Up to 50 foot lengths you should use 1/2 inch. Greater than 50 feet requires the use of a 3/4 inch. Larger diameter pipe is always better than smaller.

Lubrication is required on many of these compressors. Some models come pre-loaded with oil, and other models require you to add the needed lubricant. Most models come with a plug in the oil fill that has to be removed. After filling to the proper level, install the breather that is included. Use SAE 30 industrial grade air compressor oil or full synthetic motor oil such as Mobil 1 10W-30. Do not use regular motor oil like 10W-30 because additives in regular oil can cause valve deposits and reduce pump life.

Campbell Hausfeld air compressor has a break-in period. The first is to make it run for 30 minutes continuously for the piston rings can seat properly. Then, open the tank drain valve and turn the regulator valve spinning clockwise. Do not install a coupler or the air hose in the outlet port. Plug the unit, turn on the pressure switch in auto position and run it for 30 minutes to break the pump parts. Drain and replace oil after the first run time to maximize the pump life.

This air compressor runs so simple. In any circumstances, it is very ideal. It is perfect for flat bike tires, blowing off the driveway, or for running sprayers or grinders. The Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor parts are created to suits every client?s preferences.

Swimming Pool Heaters

| Saturday, March 10, 2012
By Owen Jones

The most costly aspect of having a swimming pool is the construction of it. Maintenance is also expensive. Therefore, people who have garden swimming pools usually attempt to get as many hours of use out it as they can. This means sitting in the garden at the poolside whenever possible and inviting friends and family around to share it all with them.

However, there is one more thing that you can do to increase the number of hours you can spend in your pool - you can lengthen the season that you are able to use it in. The temperature of the water is the only real constraint on swimming outside, it does not really matter whether it is snowing or raining as long as the water is warm enough.

Swimming in the rain, the mist and the snow is actually immense fun, at least as much fun as swimming in the sunshine, as long as the water is warm enough and there is no lightening. The answer is to install a water heater into your swimming pool system.

A swimming pool water heater can have a drastic impact on the amount of time you can spend in your pool. If you set the thermostat at 78-80 F (about 25 C), you can double the amount of time you can spend in the water. If you live in a warm part of the country, you may just require to heat the water by a couple of degrees to be able swim in luxury.

A substantial body of heated water will lose most of its heat through its surface area, so it is a good concept to cover your pool with a decent quality insulation blanket-cum-pool cover. The insulated pool blankets will reduce your heating bills quite considerably and it will raise the level of pool safety considerably as well.

The most widespread systems for heating swimming pool water are liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or oil fired. These systems are simple to install and relatively cheap to run. Electricity is also used, but it is not economical. If you live in the correct area meaning that you just require to raise the water temperature a few degrees, you could use solar power.

The problem with solar power is the profit margin the retailers would like to make. If you make your own panels, purchase in kit form or buy secondhand panels, solar power would be the best approach, if you have the sun, but not quite sufficient heat.

At the time, gas-powered swimming pool water heating is still by far the simplest to install and run and so offers the best answer to heating your pool. You will be able to get LPG water heaters secondhand from numerous sources and you will be able to buy new from the Net too. EBay is another good source of LPG swimming pool water heaters

Choosing The Right Garden Furniture

| Friday, March 9, 2012
By Owen Jones

Once you have finished making your patio, your deck or your lawn, you will unquestionably start thinking about how you can enjoy more time out of doors. Therefore, you will need some garden furniture. Many shops stock garden furniture. You can try home improvement centres, large department stores and garden centres. There are also businesses on line that will deliver. The hard job is picking your garden furniture.

There is a very broad choice of designs of garden furniture - a style to suit every person and complement every garden. So, before rushing down to the garden centre, it is worth considering for a while what you would like to accomplish with your open-air seating area. Do you want a theme? Do you want to entertain or dine there? Or do you just want to sit peacefully, take pleasure in your garden and read a magazine?

Indeed, the answer may well be a permutation of all those variables. If you simply want to sit there with a drink and a book, you may be content to just buy a couple of chairs and a small table, but if you want to have guests or eat family meals outside, you may prefer a more substantial table. A large oak table would be quite expensive, but it would look magnificent and last for a decade or more.

If you choose a table, you will have to have chairs to match, but do you want loungers as well? They could be of plastic and kept in the shed until required.

You will likely have to have some form of shade. This can be provided by folding, even removable umbrellas or by overhanging trees or shrubs. Wisteria or clematis can do the job too and cost you next to nothing.

Do you intend cooking in this space? If you do, what and how? Do you fancy a barbecue pit or a proper hob and oven? A lot of people in regions where the climate permits are doing a great deal of cooking outside in a carbon copy of an indoor kitchen, but without all the walls.. If you plan the outdoor kitchen carefully, you will be able to use it in the rain too. I find it lovely not to have kitchen smells in the house and cooking out of doors is a good experience as well.

If it gets nippy in the evenings then you can think about buying some patio heaters. They are not expensive to buy or to run and one standard patio heater can keep quite a group of people warm. (By the word 'standard' here, I mean upright, like a lamp post).

Lighting is the last major consideration in the list when deciding on garden furniture. There are actually two sorts of garden lighting to mull over: lighting to see by and lighting to lure insects away. Again, you could use standard lamps to light up your patio. They cast their light far enough so that you can still look at your garden after dusk or you could have individual wall light on dimmers.

The one light I would definitely have is a mosquito lantern. Hang this away from where you sit, because they do draw insects to them which they then electrocute with a pleasing zap.
