Almost anyone you ask will tell you that Japanese is a very complex language to learn. If you were brought up speaking a Western language, the many nuances and lyrical tone of Japanese may be difficult to learn. It takes some time, but you will one day be able to appreciate the unusual and beautiful sounds of Japanese. Don't let the fear that it's too hard stop you from even trying to learn Japanese. Learning languages is a natural human ability, one that we all share! You just have to be willing to work hard and put in the time. Make the decision that you will learn to speak Japanese fluently, work at it for a while, and it will happen sooner than you thought possible! If you want to make the process a little simpler, follow some of these helpful tips.

Everyone learns differently. Are you someone who can learn the most efficiently by listening to a recording or program and writing out the sounds that you hear?Another option is to learn how to write the characters as a first step. When you are learning a language that uses different characters and writing than your own, you need to pick one of these approaches to take and then stick with it. Don't try to use both of these methods or you are likely to get confused; Japanese is hard enough without making it harder by using conflicting methods of study. Just choose your course of study based on how you learn best.

Read Manga. Manga are a form of Japanese illustrated novels that have also been translated into many other languages. This is another enjoyable way to learn, and is great for improving your reading skills. You can start to learn what characters mean and become familiar with Japanese written material, which is the reverse of what you are used to, going from right to left on each page and from back to front. The translation into your language will also teach you about popular speech and slang. You can learn some things by taking classes and formal lessons, but it's also good to become immersed in everyday culture. If you look for Manga, you should also know that they are often written with very adult type language and themes!

Watch movies from your own language that has been reproduced in Japanese. This is a good technique because it enables you to understand a foreign language right away, since you will be hearing phrases in Japanese that are translations from words you've heard before in your own tongue. With this method you can learn Japanese more easily because you are working within the comfort zone of material you have heard before, and now you are simply learning a new way of saying it. As you get more accustomed to hearing Japanese, you can move on to original Japanese films and see how much you can comprehend.

There is no shortage of tricks and helpful tools to make learning a language easier. Find out what techniques jibe with the way you learn best, and stick with these. Don't ever get discouraged; many people have learned Japanese before, and you can too. If you are persistent and keep working at it, you will one day be fluent in Japanese!
