Original Swiss Army knives are only produced by Victorinox and Wenger, identifiable since it carries Switzerland's logo and is red in colour. These products are usually red and has Switzerland's logo on their handles. Everyday, not less than 34,000 of their major product are distributed by the company worldwide.

Carl Elsener developed the Swiss Army knife a century ago. He introduced it in 1891 and secured a patent on it on July 1897. His main aim was to provide job opportunities for Swiss people since Switzerland was too way behind during the Industrial Revolution and Swiss citizens were unceasingly fleeing their homeland to look for work. 1800s was the period of Industrial Revolution and Switzerland wasn't doing well economically. People were going abroad to look for greener pastures. So with the purpose of providing employment opportunities to the Swiss natives, Carl Elsener designed the Swiss Army knife in 1891, and made it "Swiss original" in July 1897.

Victorinox was named after Carl Elsener's mother, Victoria. In due course, he was contracted as a provider of knives to the Swiss Army which at that time, the product was known as "the soldier's knife". It was the US Army that coined the layman term "Swiss Army knife" since its Swiss term was hard for them to utter. At present, Victorinox is run by the Elseners and have more than 900 workers.

For the Army, the Swiss Army knife is an inherent tool. It is part of NASA astronauts' travel in space, for mountaineers' scaling to Mount Everest, for explorers' trips in the Arctic or to the untouched forests. By virtue of its multi-purpose feature, it is a must have for an individual to survive adventure scenarios.
