Deciding to learn Japanese is very brave, especially if you are new to learning languages. If you want to learn Japanese, you'll have to become familiar with a whole new alphabet, as well as learning completely different ways of reading, writing and speaking. There is more involved in learning Japanese than studying some vocabulary! Of course, that doesn't mean that you can't do it. Many other people have learned this language, and you can too. There are some things you can do to make your progress go more smoothly. Let's look at some useful tips that will help you with learning Japanese.

Immerse yourself in Japanese. If you can afford it, take a trip to Japan and let yourself wander without a translator. Whatever you've learned up till now may come back to you, and you will quickly increase your knowledge just to get by. For many people this sort of total immersion is the best way to learn a language. Being in another country puts you in a situation where you have to learn another language, and it opens your mind to its ability to do this. If you don't have the time or funds to travel to Japan, the second best thing is to spend time in a Japanese neighborhood where you can hear the language being spoken. If you can't find a Japanese neighborhood nearby, you can immerse yourself in the language by watching lot of movies and television in Japanese without the help of subtitles. You'll start to pick up on vocabulary pretty quickly.

If you want to learn Japanese, you have to learn its alphabet. You do not have to learn proper spelling, but at least learn what symbols correlate to what sounds. This way, if you get stuck, you can write out what you want to say phonetically. This technique will help if you go to Japan before you are fluent in the language. Learning how to write, at least phonetically can open quite a lot of doors for you and is the beginning of how to learn to read in your new language as well as speak it.

You should also play any Japanese audio programs you are using at times when you aren't consciously trying to learn. Of course, you should listen to these programs as a study drill as well. There is also something to be said for learning subconsciously. So you can have your tapes or mp3 programs playing while you do other things, whether it's cleaning the house, cooking or taking a drive to the store. A portion of your brain will be registering all these words, and this will really make learning easier. Believe it or not, you do remember things whether you are trying to or not! You could try what is known as sleep learning, letting the recordings play as you sleep!

Making the decision to learn Japanese is admirable. There is no denying that Japanese can be a hard language to learn, but once you do you'll have a lifelong skill! When it comes to traveling and learning about other cultures, there would be no better skill to have! You'd be able to enjoy an Anime movie and you would not even need subtitles to read! You could show off your language skills by renting Anime movies without subtitles and narrate them to your friends! How many people (outside of Japan) could do that? You'd also have a much easier time of it if you ever go to Japan. Learning Japanese would also give you a good foundation for learning any other Asian language down the road, if you ever want to do that. Knowing more languages can enrich your life in many ways!
