Never Pass Up A Home Renovation!

After working full time for close to 10 years, I was at last able to afford to get my very first house with my husband. Naturally, we couldn't have picked a worse time to buy and the housing market was full of not-so-nice homes for sky high prices. Fortunately we ended up finding a home which was close to amenities, in a pleasant area and within our budget. The only downside? The real estate agent had called it a fixer upper (code for: needs major home improvement).

From the instant I walked in the front door of my newly acquired house, all I could see were home renovations stretching into the distant horizon. Tacky wallpaper, dripping taps and rickety floor boards were the least of our issues. My husband came from a long family line of deck builders and considered himself somewhat of a handyman. I couldn't judge whether to laugh or look up a shrink when he told me he'd be doing almost all of the renovations by himself.

When I finally realised he was actually serious about doing the work himself, I sought the assistance of home improvement consultants. They were fantastic, they helped us decide on fundamental plans for every room in the house, from designs to home repair supplies that were sure not to break the budget. We were determined to build a place we could love, regardless of how long it took. Rather than taking over our lives, our renovations were just always in the background, there when we had the time and pushed aside when we didn't.

Our home improvements weren't what you'd call on a tight schedule. Sure, more important house repairs like leaking pipes were attended to firstly, but others, well they tended to get done when we felt like it. After the primary home repairs, we went into more home improvements, enlisting assistance from home improvement services consultants (I knew he couldn't do the entire thing). With a bruised ego after being told his interior design just wasn't up to snuff, I had to let my husband show off his carpentry.

Having timber decking back and front wasn't a question; it was just as obligatory as a front door or kitchen for my husband. Unsurprisingly then he just had to do more, so we ended up with a modern carport, a wide verandah complete with patio awnings, as well as his main body of work, the pergola. It took us a good decade to finally finish, but we loved our remodelled first home so much, we never left!
